Coworkers and managers say she’s productive and thorough and lube technician Sweden Torgerud more than holds her own in a field mostly occupied by men.
The 19-year-old Hennepin Tech. College student is in school full-time and works about 50 hours per week. She’s one of two females in the shop.
“I like working fast and like to keep working until the job is done,” said the former waitress. Having rebuilt engines, her interests also involve drivetrain work. After forcing herself to take mechanical classes in high school, she soon found that she was “totally into it.”
If Torgerud wants work volume, she’s got it, to the tune of 15 to 20 cars a day needing quick turn services. Service advisor Terry Johnson said she has gone from one of the newest lube techs to a top producer, gets along with everybody and is well-liked. “She’s fast, but not too fast where she messes stuff up,” he said. “I don’t think we could say enough good things about her.”
She competed among other tech students in Skills USA and plans to graduate this year from Hennepin Tech. Torgerud is interested in becoming a master technician one day, but there’s much to learn.
