Last year, leaders at Luther Family Buick GMC had a novel idea– why not ask employees for their favorite area charity and put the store’s support behind it?
The bulk of them chose Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, said GM Anita Hetler. “They’re a very well known and respected foundation.”
The group’s recent 61for61 Home Run Walk proved just how respected this charity is among employees and their families here. More than 65 adults turned out, plus many children and grandchildren, some in strollers. The store, which employs 85 in all, also gave a significant donation.
“Most everyone here has a family member or close friend touched by cancer and Roger Maris is the place where everyone goes for treatment in this area if they have a cancer concern,” said Hetler.
A small group ran the 5k and one chose the 10k, but most walked. A candlelight vigil started after the last person crossed the finish line. With 61 homers in a single season, Fargo-native and New York Yankee Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1961. More than 50 years later, and almost 30 years after his death, many continue to push for Maris to be entered into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
