Walleye pros find match in Family Buick GMC

Deutz Fishing pulls boats with Luther product, takes employees fishing, refers prospects

The prized fish of the upper Midwest is the walleye, and Luther Family Buick GMC is tying its products to a father-son angling duo who know how to reel them in.

The pros at Deutz Fishing most always have walleye on the mind, the fish which make their home in about 1,700 Minnesota lakes and 100 warm water streams.

Pro fisherman Spencer Deutz spread the Luther Family name in the Fargo/Moorhead area and across the country through a major sponsorship from Luther Family Buick GMC.

Without sponsors, competitive walleye fishing would not be possible, explains angler Spencer Deutz, who joins his father Ron to promote the Fargo dealership during local and regional shows and events. Walleye season is six months long at best, and the fishermen compete in about five tournaments each year.

“They have been friends and customers for a long time and we were happy to be a part of their passion,” said Anita Hetler, general manager at Family Buick GMC. The store’s name and logos are on the Deutz vehicle and apparel, and Luther appears in the Deutz’s monthly newsletter and on their website. Even better, the dealership offers Deutz fishing trips as prizes to store employees.

Brand recognition often meets the real world, however, when the Deutzes pull up to gas stations. That’s where people ask questions about the 2013 GMC 2500 truck they purchased. The duo passes on referrals to the dealership. “Most people are asking: How does it tow and pull?” said Spencer. He’s open to letting them try it out, and learning more about their 2,800-pound Ranger boat.

They’ll never turn down an opportunity to converse about the machines. “Sometimes we are in the spotlight. You never know who you’re talking to,” he said. “It does turn into representing that product.” Luther’s exposure also expands eastward, as the anglers travel across the country to fishing events.

Spencer and Ron Deutz, receive needed finances for their competitive fishing. The father-son team aims to please them, and to win some tournaments along the way.

The sport certainly offers a platform, as well. Spencer began his career as a co-angler on the Professional Walleye Trail in 2007. He has competed in the Masters Walleye Circuit with his father, finishing second in the Western Division and qualifying for the championship in their first year. “It doesn’t get much better than fishing with your dad. We spend a ton of time together,” said Spencer.

The Deutz relationship with Family Buick GMC spans close to 30 years. More information is available at deutzfishing.com.
